Which students are eligible for this activity?
Students at all levels of postsecondary education (undergraduate, Master’s and PhD), as well as a select number of secondary school students from Hong Kong and Hawaii, can apply. Students from any scholarly discipline are eligible, provided they hold a minimum B+ grade point average.
Are there any costs involved?
All students attending this activity will be fully funded, thanks to generous support from GCSO. Your airfare, accommodation and meals will be 100% covered.
Why are the two sustainability challenges focused on Asia?
Asia is at the heart of the contemporary global economy and rapid economic growth in an environmentally stressed world necessitates thinking through the possibility of new sustainability mechanisms. Asian leaders will lead the effort and students from inside and outside the region can constructively participate in this larger project.
What will the benefits be for students who participate?
Students will be introduced to leading organizations in the world (Hong Kong Green Building Council, Ocean Recovery Alliance, PepsiCo and Ronald Lu & Partners) that are seeking new ideas to tackle sustainability challenges, develop new problem-solving skills, form “green” global networks and further their knowledge of the Asian region.
When will delegates know their sustainability challenge stream and their teammates?
To permit advance research and group discussions, students will learn their case study and their team members by early-mid October 2019.
What guidance will students receive during the activity?
Each student group will have a scholar appointed as an advisor to act as a sounding board during their deliberations. Also, experts in the area of each sustainability challenge will provide briefings.
What will happen on the final evening?
There will be a celebratory dinner, which will bring together student delegates, the experts who provided briefings and representatives of the sponsoring organizations.
Will any special treatment be extended to students who miss some of their classes in early January?
Given the different academic years around the world, some students might miss a few days of school. Please work with your home department to seek their approval to attend this activity in Hong Kong.
Should you be concerned about the protests in Hong Kong?
